In the rapidly evolving landscape of digital marketing and search engine optimization, a familiar mantra has taken root: “Mentions are the new links.” As artificial intelligence reshapes how consumers discover products, services, and information, industry analysts have scrambled to understand what actually drives a brand’s visibility inside generative AI answers. But as a new empirical study reveals, not all mentions are created equal.

In an exhaustive new data-driven project, researchers analyzed the relationship between off-site brand visibility and appearance rates across major artificial intelligence platforms, including ChatGPT, AI Mode, and Google’s AI Overviews. Led by data scientist Xibeijia Guan, the project examined 10,000 distinct brands and processed a staggering 260 million non-branded AI prompts. By comparing seven distinct types of brand mentions—ranging from dynamic Reddit threads to traditional TikTok videos—the research offers a clear, data-backed starting point for brands looking to focus their public relations and digital marketing efforts in the age of AI.

Reddit Mentions Track AI Visibility More Closely Than Any Other Factor

While every single category of brand mention studied showed a strong positive correlation with AI brand visibility, one platform stood out above the rest. Reddit mentions tracked AI visibility with a Spearman correlation score of 0.75, outpacing every other factor analyzed by the data team.

To put that metric into perspective, a score of 1 would indicate that brands rank in the exact same order on both off-site mention platforms and AI-generated answers. The scores across all seven evaluated mention types ran tightly from 0.59 to 0.75. This narrow gap indicates that no single category of mention should be outright dismissed by marketers. Yet, Reddit’s score of ~0.75 cements its position as the closest proxy for AI search visibility currently available.

This strong alignment is hardly an accident of the algorithm. Reddit has actively licensed its massive repository of user-generated content to major technology players, including Google and OpenAI. This direct data-licensing agreement grants AI developers immediate access to authentic human conversations, debates, and product reviews to train their foundational models and surface trusted recommendations directly within AI answers. Furthermore, according to data from Ahrefs’ Brand Radar—a massive tracking database encompassing roughly 500 million AI prompts—Reddit currently stands as the second most cited source across ChatGPT, AI Mode, and AI Overviews, trailing only Wikipedia.

Traditional Press Coverage Fails to Outperform General Webpage Mentions

Perhaps one of the most surprising revelations of the study is that high-profile press coverage does not necessarily carry more weight than everyday web mentions when it comes to influencing artificial intelligence models.

When researchers isolated news article mentions, the combined correlation score landed at 0.67. Interestingly, this figure actually lagged slightly behind mentions gathered across the wider web at large, which posted a combined correlation score of 0.70. While traditional media coverage still demonstrates a robust positive correlation with AI visibility, it does not appear to possess a specialized superpower or extra weight compared to organic mentions scattered across standard webpages.

The research also debunked assumptions regarding website authority and raw traffic. When evaluating traffic-weighted mentions against raw mention counts, both categories scored an identical 0.70 across all three major AI platforms. This suggests that securing a mention on a smaller, highly specialized niche website may prove just as valuable for AI visibility as landing a placement in a massive, high-traffic publication. For public relations professionals and earned media strategists, the findings suggest that building a broad, diversified footprint across many different websites is far more effective than hyper-focusing exclusively on big-name media outlets.

When breaking down individual platforms, the study noted that ChatGPT behaves slightly differently than its competitors. ChatGPT tracks off-site mentions less closely than AI Mode or AI Overviews, yielding slightly lower correlation scores that generally hover in the yellow zone between 0.60 and 0.65. Despite this slight variance, the overall hierarchy of influencing factors remains largely consistent across all major generative search environments.

Unpacking the Scaling Relationship Between Web Coverage and AI Citations

As the data showed that web mentions and AI citations rise in tandem, the research team sought to measure the exact scaling mechanics: how many additional AI mentions does a brand typically earn as its broader web coverage multiplies?

The findings indicate a clear non-linear relationship. If one brand is referenced on 1,000 distinct web pages while another enjoys coverage across 10,000 pages, the second brand typically appears in AI answers about 3.7 times as often. This multiplier pattern holds true across every platform evaluated, though it registers strongest within Google’s AI Overviews at 3.5 times, compared to a softer 2.2 times multiplier on ChatGPT.

Crucially, AI visibility does not scale on a one-to-one ratio with web coverage. Multiplying a brand’s web mentions tenfold requires generating thousands of new pieces of coverage, yet it typically yields only a fractional increase in direct AI citations. Because these findings are rooted in statistical correlations rather than direct causation, researchers caution against expecting immediate miracles from a handful of new link placements or brand shoutouts. Instead, building a noticeable presence inside generative AI answers requires a sustained, long-term expansion of digital footprint, measured in months rather than weeks.

This multiplier effect also fluctuates depending on the nature of the platform. For instance, brands that experience a tenfold increase in Reddit mentions tend to experience an even sharper rise, earning roughly 5.5 times more AI mentions as a result. However, baseline engagement across the platform remains modest for the average company; the median brand analyzed in the study appeared in just eight Reddit threads, while roughly 29 percent of studied brands had zero presence on the platform at all.

Brand Size Accounts for Part of the Correlation, but Not All of It

Following the publication of earlier iterations of this research, a central question dominated industry discussions: do these strong correlations simply reflect the natural footprint of massive, established corporate giants?

Skeptics argued that the link between web mentions and AI visibility might not be driven by the mentions themselves. Instead, they theorized that web mentions merely serve as a lagging indicator of immense brand equity, market share, and public awareness—qualities that naturally prime AI models to favor household names.

To test this hypothesis, the research team controlled for brand size by segmenting the 10,000 evaluated brands into strict search-volume bands, effectively comparing companies of near-identical market demand. Within every single band, brands that accumulated a higher volume of webpage mentions continued to earn proportionally more AI mentions. While breaking the data into fifty granular search-demand groups revealed a slightly weaker relationship within individual bands than across the entire macroscopic dataset—confirming that brand size indeed accounts for a portion of the phenomenon—it did not account for the entirety of the link. Consequently, off-site webpage mentions appear to retain an independent predictive relationship with AI visibility, regardless of pre-existing brand fame.

As organizations navigate the transition from traditional search engine optimization to generative engine optimization, the study provides an empirical baseline for strategic planning. With Reddit tracking AI visibility more closely than any other monitored factor, and with everyday web coverage proving that broad distribution matters just as much as elite media placements, digital marketers now have clearer empirical direction on where to deploy their resources.
