Veteran digital designer, author, and speaker Paul Boag has announced a new collaborative venture with Smashing Magazine aimed at tackling one of the most persistent, yet rarely discussed, challenges in the modern tech industry. Set to officially launch on January 5, 2027, "UX Insiders" is a specialized, paid professional community designed exclusively for individuals practicing user experience (UX) design and research inside larger organizations.
Boag, a familiar figure in the digital design community who has authored three books with Smashing Magazine, contributed 77 articles to the publication, and serves on its advisory board, is partnering directly with Smashing co-founder Vitaly Friedman and the broader editorial team to bring the initiative to life. The announcement, delivered directly to the publication’s readership, addresses a growing vacuum in professional development for in-house designers who often find themselves navigating complex corporate dynamics entirely on their own.
The Bit of the Job Nobody Talks About
The motivation behind UX Insiders stems from decades of observation and hundreds of conversations Boag conducts annually with professionals working across the digital sector. Whether speaking with in-house employees, agency operators, or independent freelancers, Boag has repeatedly found that the most difficult aspect of a UX practitioner’s job is rarely the technical design work itself. Instead, the true friction lies in everything surrounding the design process.
In-house designers frequently grapple with formidable operational hurdles, such as stakeholders who unilaterally attempt to redesign layouts during formal review meetings, compelling business cases languishing unread in corporate inboxes, and stalled projects that have remained in a perpetual state of "about to start" for months. Compounding these traditional challenges is the modern corporate pressure brought on by senior leadership teams reading headlines claiming that artificial intelligence can autonomously execute comprehensive user research in a single afternoon.

Compounding these workplace hurdles is a sense of professional isolation. Many corporate UX practitioners operate as a team of one, or at best, as part of a very small handful of specialists within a broader enterprise. While internal colleagues are often supportive, they are inherently constrained by the same organizational blind spots and corporate culture. When a UX designer faces an intractable stakeholder or a novel workflow roadblock down the corridor, there is rarely anyone nearby who has successfully navigated the exact same corporate political landscape.
According to Boag, what is desperately missing in the industry is an outside perspective—someone who has encountered an equally difficult stakeholder or organizational barrier and can offer practical, battle-tested advice on how they managed it. Compounding this isolation is the accelerating pace of change across the digital landscape. The industry currently possesses very little established best practice for integrating emerging artificial intelligence tools into daily workflows, leaving practitioners to figure out complex operational shifts largely in isolation.
So I’m Starting UX Insiders
To bridge this gap, UX Insiders has been structured as a small, curated, paid community tailored specifically for individuals performing UX work inside organizations. The network welcomes designers, researchers, UX leads, and anyone tasked with championing user experience principles within their company, regardless of their formal job title.
The community model centers on regular interaction, featuring weekly live calls hosted personally by Boag, alongside an active communication channel where members can exchange ideas. However, Boag emphasizes that the most valuable guidance often flows peer-to-peer among members facing parallel corporate realities, a dynamic he has observed firsthand through the operation of Agency Academy, his separate weekly community for digital agency owners launched in July 2024.

Membership exclusivity is a core tenet of the community’s design. Participation is restricted strictly to in-house practitioners to ensure a secure environment where members can speak candidly about their organizations without fear of sensitive internal details leaking to outside parties. Furthermore, the strict vetting process purposefully excludes external agencies and freelance consultants who might otherwise join primarily to pitch their commercial services to corporate employees.
Prospective members must first complete a brief application process. The check is designed simply to verify that the applicant is genuinely embedded within an in-house corporate structure, ensuring that once eligibility is confirmed, admission is readily granted.
Founder Pricing and How the Launch Works
To incentivize early adoption, the initial 25 members to join the community will secure access under special founder pricing tiers. Members can choose between an annual billing option equivalent to £49 per month plus VAT (totaling £588 a year) or a standard monthly recurring payment of £59 plus VAT. Crucially, participants who lock in these founder rates will retain them for the duration of their membership.
Recognizing corporate procurement realities, employers are permitted to cover membership fees via official business invoices, allowing many participants to expense the cost directly through corporate staff training and professional development budgets.

Financial risk for early registrants is minimized through a conditional launch structure. No participant will be billed until the platform officially opens its doors on Tuesday, January 5, 2027. Furthermore, to ensure the community reaches a viable operational threshold, the initiative requires a minimum of 15 committed members by Friday, December 11. If this minimum threshold is not met by the deadline, the community will not proceed, and enrolled applicants will not incur any financial charges.
Run An Agency Or Freelance?
While UX Insiders maintains a strict focus on internal corporate practitioners, Boag has acknowledged the parallel needs of independent operators and agency owners through his ongoing management of Agency Academy. Operating under a similar philosophy of weekly Thursday calls and an active peer network, the agency-focused community provides a collaborative space where independent operators frequently share operational insights and pass client work directly to one another.
In conjunction with the UX Insiders rollout, a special enrollment rate has been made available for Smashing Magazine readers operating agencies or freelance practices. Until the end of November, independent professionals can join Agency Academy at a reduced rate of £59 a month plus VAT, or £49 a month plus VAT billed annually at £588 a year. This promotional rate represents a reduction from the standard £79 monthly fee, with early joiners retaining the discounted rate for as long as they maintain their membership.
With both communities structured to address the distinct operational isolation felt by digital professionals—whether navigating internal corporate politics or running independent businesses—Boag’s latest initiatives aim to build sustainable support networks across the evolving digital landscape.
